Producer Nick Gates got me on board to shoot the opening to his Grasslands film for the Wild Isles series produced by Silverback Films and BBC Studios. We travelled the magical Hebridean island of North Uist to film the dune succession habitat which is a result of pioneer grass species colonising the hostile dune ecosystem.

Due to the protection this colonisation offers in form of grass covered dunes a unique dune grassland ecosystem called the Machair has established here over the last 8,000 years. Every spring it bursts into a sea of colour which is regarded as one of the best wildflower displays in Europe. This habitat is also a key breeding ground for all manner of birds from Lapwing, Dunlin and Corncrakes to Snipe, Redshank and Ringed Plover.
